Now this is something that I haven’t seen in a while, Charisma Man. I recommend the site and some background information on the wikipedia page. This excerpt from the page gives you a good idea what it’s about:

“‘Charisma Man’ manipulates the superhero genre to ridicule the often unjustified confidence of foreign English teachers in Japan. Although something of a loser in his home country (which in later strips is revealed to be Canada – the home of Charisma Man’s creator), when around Japanese people the central character transforms from a skinny nerd into a muscle-bound hunk, attractive to Japanese women and admired by Japanese men.
Like other super-heroes, however, Charisma Man has one major weakness: ‘Western Woman’. Whenever in the presence of non-Japanese females his powers disappear and he becomes an unattractive, skinny wimp once more.”

I’ve looked around but I can’t really find a good link to many of the comics. The author’s page has the first four and google and google will get you another one or two, but that seems to be it.

This is why it’s important to watch Japanese television, I missed a Quentin Tarantino cameo in a Softbank commercial. Now I know that I will buy 10 more TVs so that I can record and watch all shows and commercials at once. Watch the commercial and weep with joy!

So sometime ago I went to the Mie International Festival. It was on a Sunday and I didn’t have much to do and I thought it might be interesting. Well, while I was there I was interviewed by an online news organization for the brazilian speakers of Japan. If you know Portuguese (or just want to watch the video) then you can watch it here (I can’t embed it, sorry).

I’ll try in the future to be interviewed by other groups of people so that I can show you me, for the benefit of all.

So this isn’t celebrating their first time wearing a robot exoskeleton? You mean the internet lied to me?!

Recently 成人の日 (せいじんのひ, Coming of age day) happened. This year it occurred on the 11th of January (it’s always the second monday of January) and I sat there doing nothing. Nothing! This holiday/event, which I will probably never experience ~~until I kidnap and raise a Japanese child~~ is a commemoration of teenagers reaching adulthood. It’s not very exciting since it’s just an acknowledgement for young adults, but there have been some people who want to make the ceremony more interesting.

Don’t go without protection.

I haven’t gone in person to one of these yet so, unfortunately (or maybe not), I can’t really tell you more than what I know from what other people have told me/written down. What I can do is show you a video that lets you see the clothing they wear on this day as well as a description of the events. Maybe I’ll go Jack Bauer style on one of them and pry out some information (and molars!).

Also, since the drinking/smoking age is 20 this is a time for many to celebrate by going out drinking. Just don’t tell them that I told you this.

Would you believe that they advertise commercials about video games? Isn’t that stupid and childish; don’t they know that everyone stops playing them before they’re able to do their times tables?

I seem to remind both teachers and students of someone they have seen or known. I wonder how much “reminding” I’ll be doing today.

So the students that I see at the kindergartens that I go to kept saying that I was like Yoshio. And for the longest time I didn’t know what they were talking about. Last week one of the teachers told me that the kids were talking about Yoshio Kojima. You might have seen some of his videos on Youtube, but chances are you probably don’t really know him. So to increase your knowledge in recent Japanese events, here are a couple videos of him.

So now you know how I act (I don’t wear a mankini when I teach 5 year olds). Scary isn’t it?
